May 28, 2012    NeedlesxPins   Allthetime   Korean Gut

Who wants some super-red-for-some-reason photos from the Needles//Pins 12:34 LP release party?  (It is you guys).  (All of the photos that I took of The Jolts are even worse than these so I am not posting any, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t think that they are great).

In conclusion and in summary, the rest of my summer is going to be spent listening to that album allthetime allthetime allthetime, and nobody can stop me.

January 30, 2012    NeedlesxPins   Slow Learners

Needles//Pins/Slow Learners show last night!

It was pretty good.  I didn’t take pictures because of general frantic dancing, but there were lots of enjoyable songs from Needles//Pins’ upcoming LP (being released in May, I think).  I didn’t catch all of the song names but I really liked Pulse.  Plus general angst (“And you say that you want me too, well fuck you.”)

Sometimes it’s just really nice to see a band that you like that much.

Slow Learners were really good too! (ETA video that someone nice uploaded - the audio gets better about halfway through).  They are playing at Zoo Shop on Friday.

November 15, 2011    Pierced Arrows   NeedlesxPins

Pierced Arrows played at Iron Road (with Needles//Pins and Bad News Babysitters) last Friday and someone kindly uploaded some video!  I had to leave this show early because my body did the thing where it didn’t like that I was standing for a long period of time, but up until that point it was a good time.

Speaking of Needles//Pins, they have a track on the new Nite Prison LP, the release party of which is this Friday at the Astoria.

September 25, 2011    Girls Girls Girls   The Radii   The Polymorphines   NeedlesxPins

So this weekend was pretty delightful.  Now I have ALL OF THE HOMEWORK to do, but it was pretty much definitely worth it?

On Friday I went to the Railway to celebrate my birthday, so that was a pretty excellent time.  Girls Girls Girls were here from England; they played some stuff from their upcoming album, which sounds pretty promising, and a bunch of their old stuff too. It was another we’re-the-only-ones-dancing situation, like the last time they were here, but come on, who doesn’t like an excuse to drunkenly yell “Hello sailor” repeatedly?  I don’t know, you guys.

Anyhoop, then on Saturday I caught Tassels and Fine Mist at Zulu, and then later went to the Fairview for The Radii/The Polymorphines/Needles//Pins/The Tranzmitors.  So that was a pretty fantastic combination!  Highlights:

  • One of the Tranzmitors’ sisters was having her bachelorette party at the show
  • I got to be the person who plays the tambourine for a song during The Polymorphines
  • Then Bryce Dunn (Tranzmitors drummer) played the tambourine sometimes during Needles//Pins’ set
  • I didn’t get any pictures of the Tranzmitors’ set due to extreme dancing times, but they had a pretty nice setup for (singer/guitarist) Jeff, who I guess hurt his leg? with a chair and a table with a lamp and tea set
  • When they were playing Live a Little More, during the line “Home in the evening I put on the kettle and some old records that you’ve never heard,” Jeff looked significantly at said tea set

Okay, now it’s time to go make some more flash cards about seed plant taxonomy.

I like the part where they switch instruments.

September 9, 2011    Fine Mist   NeedlesxPins   Korean Gut   Murder Castle
So I had a really nice weekend last weekend, which was good because it was my last weekend before going back to school (good grief).  Last semester!  Anyway.
Thursday!  Fine Mist and SSRIs, some of which was recorded.
Friday! Needles//Pins, Fist City, and Korean Gut at Antisocial.  Finally got my hands on the Needles//Pins/Moby Dicks split 7”, which I highly recommend!  Above is a photo of Korean Gut when one of them got someone in the crowd to hold their hat above their head for a song.  Also see below post for some video from that show.  Good times.
Saturday! Picnic at Trout Lake with music from Murder Castle, Bleating Hearts, Thee Ahs, etc.  It was a beautiful day to sit around eating fruit from the farmer’s market while listening to some quality tunes.  Check out Murder Castle’s tumblr or facebook for photos.
Sunday!  Victory Square Block Party.  My first!  I missed part of it due to failing-at-leaving-the-house times, but I’m really glad I went because it was SUCH A NICE TIME.
Coming up: Shindig!  Olio Fest!  Girls Girls Girls return from England!  Maybe I’ll do some homework sometime in between those things!  Who knows!

June 26, 2011    Mountain Goats   NeedlesxPins   Teenager   Dead Ghosts
Okay, so I have been meaning to write a blag post about last weekend but am only just getting around to it.  Oh well!  My sister was visiting so it was just generally good times all ‘round.
1.) Last Friday was The Mountain Goats!
which was delightful in part because of this; it was only a year ago that I was saying I wanted to see them with Megan and then! we did that!
Also because they played You Were Cool, which I just COULD NOT handle AT ALL.
(Now all I need to do is see them playing this).
Also I appreciated it when someone was yelling about how this summer wasn’t very good, and John Darnielle said that it was too early to tell, and that maybe we were just getting all the bad stuff out of the way early so July and August will just be gravy (I’m paraphrasing, but he definitely used the word gravy).
2.) Then on Saturday, we went to karaoke to try and tackle the timeless question: Can you pay my automo-bills?  (It turns out that I don’t think you do).
3.) Then on Sunday, Car Free Day! which is always nice.  We stopped by Neptoon and caught the D.B. Buxton Band/Group; I had never seen him with a full band before and it was pretty good.
4.) Then on Monday Needles//Pins, Teenager (from Toronto), and Dead Ghosts played at Antisocial.
I liked it when the lead singer of Teenager said he went to high school with Adam and Tony from Needles//Pins, because.  Adorbs.
Also when the singer of Dead Ghosts couldn’t get his microphone to work and so he just threw a sweater over a regular mic to get a similar effect.
The above photo is from one of the Antisocial bathrooms.
In conclusion, I like making lists and using bullet points.  And geeking out about the things I like.  Okay!
